Sun Wukong, the character from the 16th century Chinese Literature, Journey to the West, is my artwork for this time. We started with a draft done on client’s torso by using calligraphy brushes. I enjoy using calligraphy brushes because it is easy to modify, and I can train the stability of my hands at the same time. This Chinese style has already become one of my marks.

When I work in my studio, I like to take my time as long as the client is not in a rush. As you can see, the first draft is light and dim.

I will apply several pads on the tattoo area. This pad is the product of medical & cosmetology. It helps the wounds to recover sooner and it also help the colorfastness of the tattoo.

This picture shows how the tattoo and skin look like after 28 days of recovering. As you can see, even the light hue is still colorfast. Remember to apply the recovering lotion for at least one week and also apply the cosmetology pad for 72 hours.
This is final of the monkey tattoo. During the process, more details were added on monkey’s face in order to make it more delicate and refined.

Check out my latest work. This client came to Taiwan from London. We did a back to chest piece, all together 4 straight days!! He’s flying right back to London tonight. What a customer. Made me feel very special.
Also standing next to him made me feel very short and old >_#

My USA trip concluded last week. Here are some more highlights.
Last 2 of our clients from the Bay Area all have been following me for a while now. Resh wanted a dragon around his arm. I have probably done few hundred dragon tattoos in my life. The free-handing sketch took me a while because I tried to add new twist to the familiar dragon.

Here is it. I put the dragon head near the wrist. How do you like it ^.< ?

My last client in SF was Tommy. He told my agent he’s been following my works for about 6 years now; before I even got a website. Tommy was hoping to get a tattoo done before his 40th birthday. He told me he’s been thinking about it for a few years now. What a coincidence that we met just 2 weeks before he turned 40.

I really wish Tommy well. He told me this tattoo is a collective gift from his friends for his 40th birthday. I am really happy to make his wish come true!

Kaivalya : Absolute Oneness
This full sleeve tattoo represents both sides of human nature - good and evil. The Sanskirt Kaivalya splits a Buddha face and Demon face where the evil side is gated behind the Sanskrit textures. Towering dragon comes out of Buddha head representing SELF. This is truly a beautiful piece we finished in Las Vegas this US trip. Both myself and the client are very proud of it.
My first America trip has been fun and memorable. I am writing to you from Las Vegas as we speak. We are heading to Los Angeles next Monday and will stay there until Oct 18th.
I’d like to share with you my works in San Francisco. We are tattooing from my agent’s house in downtown SF. It’s pretty cool :-)
The first client is Pat, a great gentleman who wants to snake zodiac for his son. He told me his father used to be in military in Taiwan. I was glad to find such common connection with my first client in US soil.

Our second client came at the last minute. David wanted me to design a boar tattoo based out of famous Chinese myth story Journey to the West. It’s actually my first time tattooing a boar, so I was pretty intrigued by the idea.

We also found some free time to tour San Francisco. It was fascinating to visit SFMOMA. I was able to see works from Picaso, George Braque, Henri Matisse, and Andy Warhol. It was like an artist paradise when I got to see so many amazing works under one roof. My artistic appetite is fed ^___^

This is one of my most popular works. Everyday I get at least couple inquiries from around the world to do the same tattoo. People mostly referenced it the “Buddha Face Tattoo”. I typically don’t duplicate my arts. However, this Vairocana piece is the 3rd one I completed (due to its popularity). Even though it looks very similar to the one I done before, I tried to embrace every subtle difference of when I make it, how, where and on whom. I am creating the same image, but spirit of the art will never be the same.
This customer is a pilot of an airline. He brought so many references of my body art. He loves my dragon. So I combined several different concepts of other dragons to come up with this sketch.

Starting around 11 am, we finished this piece within a day, spending totally about 10 hours. The captain is such a tough guy… I think it’s definitely smooth and safe on his flights.

Done! We both like this fierce look of the dragon with startling aura!

A dragon head shot feels different from a whole dragon.

Personally, I like how the dragon whiskers extend perfectly to the shoulder edge~

We took a picture together after completing the work.

Then the pilot left me a message on my Facebook Wall:
Andy, thanks again for this incredible piece of art. It’s an honor to have you do this for me! I will be in touch to arrange a time to come to Taipei to have another one!
Same here CAPTION! See you in Taiwan sometime, and look forward to our next creation.
Dragon tattoos always give me the most inspirations. It is also always the most challenging to do. Because every dragon I create is different; there is no set pattern to it. When my creative juice is flowing, there’s always element of surprises. That’s why every tattooing experience is an exciting journey for me and my clients !!

This is a long time client of mine. Top part of the tattoo was the latest addition done in 2010. The texture seems pretty good post recovery! This year the client asked to expand the tattoo further (pic above is the modified version). Tattooing always develops magical friendship. The first time this client came to me in Taiwan from Toronto. Then I’ve been going to Toronto every year since. I still remember the first time we worked, he did not want to let the tattoo exposed over shirt sleeve. Funny thing is, the tattoo is getting larger and longer each year :-)

The extended tattoo seems a lot more powerful than before.

Elbow area faded a bit. It’s a tough spot to tattoo.

From this angel, the tattoo looks even more BAD ASS :o

We’ve also worked on extending the tattoo on left shoulder. It was first done when the client visited Taiwan. He always wanted to avoid showing his face in the photo haha. My experience is that tattoo fanatics often time are shy and introvert. It’s such an interesting societal contrast.
What is your motivation of getting tattoo?
